Best Business Bank Account for Solopreneurs in 2026 (Found's Tax Filing Just Disappeared)

You open a "free" business checking account, start stacking up receipts through the app's tax tools, and six months later you find out the feature you actually needed just got pulled. That's what happened to Found users this year: as of March 2026, Found no longer lets any customer, free or paid, file a complete business tax return through its app, and in-app quarterly tax payments now sit behind the $35-a-month Found Plus plan (source: nerdwallet.com, 2026). Compare that to Novo or Mercury, which still charge nothing at all for a working checking account with no minimum balance (source: novo.co/business-checking, 2026). The "best free business bank account" lists rarely mention that free and useful aren't the same thing.

Why the surface-level comparison is misleading

Most roundups treat "no monthly fee" as the end of the analysis, but the fee waiver conditions are where the real cost hides. Bluevine's Plus plan is marketed at $30/month, "or $0 when you meet the waiver requirements," but those requirements are a $20,000 average daily balance across your accounts and $2,000 in monthly debit card spend. The Premier tier waives its $95/month fee only above a $100,000 balance and $5,000 in monthly card spend (source: bluevine.com, 2026). A freelancer carrying a few thousand dollars of working capital is paying the full sticker price, not the marketed $0.

APY numbers get similarly dressed up. Found advertises 2.00% APY on its free plan, but that rate only applies to customers who signed up after November 1, 2025, and only if they spend $5,000 a month on the Found debit card (source: nerdwallet.com, 2026). Miss the spend threshold and you're earning nothing on a balance that's supposedly interest-bearing. Bluevine's headline 3.0% APY is real, but it's exclusive to the $95/month Premier tier; the free Standard plan pays 1.3% and only if you meet separate monthly activity requirements (source: bluevine.com, 2026).

Feature removal is the blind spot nobody plans for. Found's full tax-return filing was a genuine differentiator against Novo, Mercury, and Bluevine, none of which file taxes at all. Losing it mid-2026 means anyone who chose Found specifically for that reason now needs a separate filing tool, on top of whatever plan fee they're already paying (source: found.com/taxes, 2026). Lili has the opposite problem: its free Core tier has no invoicing or automated bookkeeping at all, both features are locked behind the $35/month Smart plan, so "free" Lili is really just a checking account with a debit card (source: lili.co/plans, 2026).

The decision that actually matters

If you're a true solo operator with simple income and no need for automated tax filing, Novo or Mercury are the rational default. Both charge nothing for checking, carry no minimum balance, and let you keep 100% of what you earn without a spend quota to hit for interest. Mercury's ATM reimbursement is unlimited worldwide, which matters more than it sounds if you travel for client work, while Novo's $7 monthly ATM cap is fine if you're mostly running everything through cards and transfers (source: fitsmallbusiness.com, 2026; source: nerdwallet.com, 2026).

If your business generates enough revenue that quarterly estimated taxes are a real headache, run the actual math before picking Found or Lili. Found Plus at $35/month only makes sense once its bundled tax and expense tools save you more than $420 a year compared to a free plan plus a separate bookkeeping app, especially now that full return filing is gone and you'll need a tax preparer or software like FreeTaxUSA or a CPA regardless (source: found.com/taxes, 2026). Lili Smart, also $35/month, is worth it only if you're actually going to send invoices through the platform; otherwise you're paying for automation you won't use.

If you're holding a meaningful cash buffer, $20,000 or more, Bluevine's Plus plan can genuinely pay for itself through APY once you clear the balance and spend thresholds; below that, the free Standard plan's 1.3% is still competitive against a $0-fee Novo or Mercury account earning nothing. The practical move: open the free account first, run your actual numbers for two or three months, and only upgrade to a paid tier once you can point to a specific feature or interest rate that beats what you're paying. Account terms and fee structures change often in this category, so confirm current pricing directly on each provider's site before you open anything.
