Best Help Desk Tool for Solopreneurs in 2026 (Freshdesk's "Free Forever" Plan Just Disappeared)

You're answering support emails from your phone at 11pm again, and some "best help desk software" roundup just told you to sign up for Freshdesk's free plan. Bad advice in 2026: that plan is gone. Freshworks cut it from 10 agents to 2 in November 2024, then killed it outright for most accounts by mid-2025, sending existing free users a deactivation notice with a hard cutoff date (source: community.freshworks.com, 2024; edugeek.net, 2025). The cheapest way back in now is Freshdesk's Growth plan at $19 per agent per month, billed annually. If you're a solo operator who just wants a shared inbox and saved replies, Help Scout's actual free tier, capped at 5 users and 100 monthly contacts, will cost you nothing and get you further than Freshdesk's old "free forever" pitch ever really did.

Why the surface-level comparison is misleading

Most roundups list one headline number per tool and stop there, which hides the fact that the cheapest listed plan is often not the plan you'd actually use. Zendesk's site shows $19 per agent per month for Support Team, but that tier has no knowledge base, no AI agent, and no chat channel, the exact things a one-person shop needs to stop answering the same three questions by hand. Getting those means Suite Team at $55 per agent per month, nearly three times the advertised entry price (source: zendesk.com/pricing, 2026).

AI pricing is the second blind spot. Zendesk's AI agents are billed per "automated resolution" on top of your plan, at roughly $1.20 to $1.50 per resolved ticket depending on whether you pre-commit to a volume pack, and Zendesk does not publish that rate on its own pricing page, it only surfaces in sales contracts and third-party breakdowns (source: eesel.ai, 2026). Front does something similar: AI Copilot is a $20-per-seat-per-month add-on and Autopilot bills $0.05 per conversation, both stacked on top of the $25 to $105 per-seat plan price (source: front.com/pricing, 2026). A tool that looks cheap on the pricing page can get expensive fast once you turn on the AI features the marketing page led with.

The third blind spot is what "unlimited" and "included" quietly exclude. Help Scout's Standard plan, at $25 per user per month, includes only 2 inboxes and one basic SLA policy, additional inboxes cost $10 a month each (source: helpscout.com/pricing, 2026). Freshdesk's Growth plan includes only the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions before extra sessions cost $49 per 100 (source: freshworks.com/freshdesk/pricing, 2026). None of that shows up in a simple price comparison table, but it's exactly what determines your real monthly bill three months in.

ToolWhat you getReal priceThe catch
FreshdeskTicketing, shared inbox, knowledge base, Freddy AI Agent (Growth plan)$19/agent/month, billed annually. No more free-forever tier. The old 10-agent free plan was cut to 2 agents in Nov 2024, then discontinued for most accounts by mid-2025 with short notice (source: community.freshworks.com, 2024; edugeek.net, 2025).
Help ScoutShared inbox, saved replies, docs site (Free plan); live chat and AI Inbox assistant on StandardFree for up to 5 users/1 inbox/100 contacts, or $25/user/month for StandardOnly 1 inbox and 100 monthly contacts on the free tier; extra inboxes cost $10/month even on paid plans (source: helpscout.com/pricing, 2026).
ZendeskEmail ticketing (Support Team) or full omnichannel plus AI agents (Suite Team)$19/agent/month for ticketing only; $55/agent/month for AI and knowledge baseAI agent resolutions are billed separately at roughly $1.20-$1.50 each, a rate not listed on the public pricing page (source: eesel.ai, 2026).
FrontShared inbox, ticketing, AI Topics, basic automation (Starter)$25/seat/month for up to 10 seatsAI Copilot is a $20/seat/month add-on and Autopilot bills $0.05 per conversation on top of the base plan (source: front.com/pricing, 2026).

There's a fourth blind spot worth naming: annual versus monthly billing. Every price above assumes annual billing, and every one of these vendors charges noticeably more if you pay month to month. Front's Starter plan, for example, is quoted at $25 per seat per month annually, but a solopreneur who isn't ready to commit for a year should expect to pay a meaningfully higher monthly rate for the same Starter tier (source: front.com/pricing, 2026). A comparison built only on annual numbers makes every tool look cheaper than what a cautious solo founder testing the waters will actually be billed in month one.

The decision that actually matters

If you're answering fewer than roughly 50 emails a week and mostly need one shared inbox with saved replies, Help Scout's free plan is the right call, it costs nothing and covers 5 users, which is more seats than most solopreneurs will ever fill. The moment you cross 100 monthly contacts or need a second inbox, the Standard plan at $25 per user per month is still cheaper than anything Zendesk or Front offer at a comparable feature level.

If your support volume already justifies AI-assisted replies and you want the AI cost baked into a flat monthly number instead of a per-resolution meter, Help Scout's Plus plan at $45 per user per month includes unlimited AI drafts rather than charging per use (source: helpscout.com/pricing, 2026). That is a meaningfully different pricing model than Zendesk's per-resolution fee or Front's per-conversation Autopilot charge, and it's the one that's actually predictable when you're budgeting as a one-person business.

Skip Zendesk and Front entirely unless you specifically need their omnichannel routing or multi-brand support, both are built and priced for teams with several agents, not one person, and their AI add-ons punish exactly the low, unpredictable ticket volume a solo business runs. Before you sign up for anything, open the billing page and check whether the plan you're quoted charges per seat, per resolution, or per conversation. That single detail predicts your actual bill three months from now far better than the number on the pricing page does.
